AROUND THE ACADEMY
Students will experience significantly more interaction with employers and industry than those in a traditional comprehensive. The range of activities include projects where key stage 4 work in employer supported teams to find a solution to a challenge, employer enhanced activities linked to post-16 BTEC units, visits to workplaces, and a regular series of inspirational speakers, including some of our former students who are now working in industry. Speakers included Melissa Chema, a BBC wildlife documentary maker and author who spoke about what she had learned from working with orangutans, one of the founding members of Reach Robotics, who talked to students through what it takes to train a gaming robot and a Cosmo-chemist, Tim Gregory - who took part in the BBC2 television series ‘Astronauts – do you have what it takes?’.

Ben - now at Airbus "I joined Airbus in 2016 on their higher apprenticeship scheme, following the completion of my A-Levels at BTEA. During my time at the Engineering Academy, I was provided with significant exposure to engineering firms in the area. This included tours of the main sites of companies like Airbus and GKN as well being able to take part in a year long project with Rolls Royce. These experiences piqued my interest in Aerospace engineering and helped to strengthen my application to the industry leaders when I began looking to start my career. "

Christina “I am very happy with my results! The four years that I have had at the academy have truly been very memorable. The academy and teachers have been so amazing and have helped me to find confidence in myself and my work. Thank you BTEA! I will definitely miss you. In September I will be going to the University of Bath to study Mathematics. My future plans are still uncertain but I’m sure that I will figure it all out as I go.”
Ewan "After finishing my GCSEs, I knew that I wanted to continue with A-Levels in science and technology. I felt that both the selection of subjects available at BTEA combined with its focus on STEM made it the ideal choice. I studied A-Levels in Physics, Maths and Computing while at BTEA. I also studied for a Level 3 BTEC in Engineering, which I might not have had the opportunity to do otherwise. I found that this in particular gave me a good foundation of knowledge for the various disciplines of engineering. There were also a range of extracurricular activities available at BTEA. I was able to complete the Engineering Education Scheme, a project where I worked with other students to investigate and solve a real problem in industry. I felt that besides being an interesting challenge, this and other activities helped me develop key skills and were good experiences to draw from in interviews and applications. After completing my studies at BTEA, I went on to start a degree-level apprenticeship with GKN Aerospace. On the whole, I feel that studying at BTEA has put me in good stead for my future career."

This not only shows just how vital STEM jobs have been to the British economy in the 21st Century, but with growth set to continue, it also highlights how important it is that solutions are found to ensure that future demand is met"
"Being vital to economic development and international competitiveness, the relatively low number of graduates entering into STEM occupations is a serious cause for concern among employers, with half warning that 'a lack of talent could put off foreign investment' and over half (56%) expecting the shortage to worsen over the next decade.
And despite the increase in STEM undergraduates over the past few years, two-fifths of employers cited a shortage of STEM graduates as a key barrier to recruiting appropriate staff."
